Maroon Berets Demo
A downloadable game
Update: the game is set to be launched on August 1st, 2026.
Slip into a compound you can't see, only hear. Read the ground by your own footsteps, place your squad by the sound of their boots, and take an objective without a single alarm being raised. Maroon Berets is a tactical stealth game built from the ground up for blind and visually-impaired players — no screen required, nothing to see, everything to listen for.
----------------------------------------
What it is
You command a detachment of Pakistan's Special Service Group — the Maroon Berets — on quiet, deniable counter-insurgency operations: infiltrate a held compound, do the job, and get your team out before anyone knows you were there. It's inspired by the tactics of classic squad-stealth games like Commandos, rebuilt as a pure audio experience that a sighted player and a blind player can play equally well, side by side.
Every wall, guard, ladder, footstep and gunshot is placed in 3-D sound around you. You move tile by tile, listen to the patrols, pick your line, and act. The terrain tells you where you are by the sound underfoot — grass, stone, gravel that gives you away, mud that slows you but muffles your steps, a hollow wooden floor, a rooftop. The whole game is spoken and sounded; it works with your screen reader or with its own built-in speech, and needs no graphics at all.
What you get
• A story campaign — six hand-built missions plus a full tutorial that teaches the systems one at a time.
• 50 procedurally generated operations across five difficulty tiers, each with its own written briefing, so there is always a fresh compound to crack. Note a good seed and replay it, or take the next one blind.
• Challenge and Endless modes for score-chasing and one-more-run play.
• A real detachment of specialists, each with their own job: the team leader, the breacher who defeats chained doors, the demolitions man who cuts wire and rigs charges, the infiltrator, the combat diver, the marksman, the driver, and the assault dog. The compound you're handed decides who you need to bring.
• Eight kinds of objective — recover documents, plant a charge, free and escort a hostage, reach an extraction point, eliminate a specific target or the whole garrison, beat the clock — mixed and matched per mission.
• Squad command: switch between operators, or give orders — follow, hold, regroup, move, attack, hold overwatch, or send a specialist to do their job — and let the ally AI carry them out.
• Enemies with depth: patrols, sentries, gunners, commanders and guard dogs, drawn from rival factions — militia, tribesmen, smugglers, zealots and a hardened cadre — each garrison composed and behaving to its own character.
Stealth with real texture
• Stance — stand, crouch, or go prone. Lower is slower and quieter and lets you hide in cover with a guard right beside you; standing is fast but seen from further.
• Rooftops and ladders — climb onto a building to take the high line and the long sightlines, but stay low up there or you're a silhouette against the sky. Lookouts watch the yard from above; a marksman prone on a roof can pick a sentry off the ground below.
• Ground that matters — gravel crunches and carries; mud is slow slog but swallows your footfalls; a window is a loud way in. Trees and bushes are cover you slip into; rocks, vehicles, furniture and armouries are solid things to break a line of sight and move around.
• Sound is information — hidden bodies, buried charges, mounted guns, wind, alert states, and the position of every guard reach you by ear and by a survey mode that lets you sweep the whole map tile by tile before you commit.
• Save mid-mission and resume exactly where you left off.
Built to be accessible
Maroon Berets isn't a sighted game with a screen reader bolted on — it was designed audio-first. Spatial audio for everything, spoken menus and readouts, a footstep language for terrain and floor, a survey cursor that carries the audio listener so you can explore freely, and a full in-game controls reference you can call up any time. Play it with NVDA, JAWS or the game's own speech.
What you need
• Windows.
• Headphones or stereo speakers strongly recommended — the game is played in 3-D sound.
• A screen reader is optional; speech is built in.
Buying and playing
Your purchase is a licence tied to your own account. After buying on Gumroad from within the demo menu, you receive a licence key; create an account in the game, redeem the key once, and you're in — on your machine, at your pace. One purchase, one account.
